A shotgun golf start means that all of your foursomes will start on different holes of the course, at the same time. While there is not technically a shotgun that sounds to indicate the start, golfers begin golfing when they reach their assigned tee box. The goal is to have all golfers begin and end around the same time.
Tee times mean that the foursomes tee off on hole #1, in sequence about every 10 minutes. Your first starting group will finish first, and your last starting group will finish last.
Think of a shotgun contract as reserving restaurant space. If you are bringing (6) four tops to a restaurant, and they are ok being seated at different times or when tables are available, that is more like a tee time start.
However, you want to reserve all six tables to begin and end eating at the same time, you have to firm up that reservation before the restaurant's seating demand gets popular and there may be a fee, minimum and/or automatic gratuity charge for having this luxury and ensuring the restaurant holds enough table space.
This is similar to a shotgun start. The golf course must block a certain number of tee times ahead of your start time, so that the required starting holes are open for your foursomes. If you are bringing 52 golfers (13 foursomes), the course will most likely put 1-2 foursomes on each starting hole. Therefore, you will need 6-8 holes clear for your start time. You are not only paying for the time your group is on the golf course, you are also helping the course recover some of the revenue lost with the blocked tee times ahead of your start time.
A golf handicap is a measure of a player's potential ability, calculated based on the best scores from their most recent rounds. It is used to level the playing field in competitions and allow players of different skill levels to compete fairly. Handicaps are converted into strokes given to a player using a calculation with the course's slope and index ratings.
Most large golf outings or tournaments do not utilize handicap scoring, as collecting everyone's handicap and calculating the strokes given takes time (and honesty by the golfer, if they do not have an official GHIN index). The lower the golfer's handicap, the more skilled they are.
